Getting Over First Day/Week Jitters

School is back in session for many CMEC students and the rest of our students will join us on Monday. It’s common for students (and parents) to have a little anxiety about the transition back. Here are a few tips from several popular websites to help make the first day, week and month the BEST EVER!

Life Changes:

Starting at a new school can present an especially daunting challenge…asking open-ended questions can give your child the space to figure out his own feelings. If he expresses a specific worry, you might say something like, “What makes you feel that way?” and see where the conversation leads.

From Parenting:

“I don’t want to be away from you for so long!”

The Fear: “I don’t want to be away from you for so long!”

The Fix: Start by acknowledging your child’s concern at drop-off time. You might try saying, “I know you’re scared to be without me,” and then explain when you’ll be back by telling him which activity he can plan to see you after, such as music or science class (the teacher can let you know what the end-of-day schedule will be).

Kids, like dogs, can sense fear.

Your child(ren) will love their experience at CMEC, and it is important to remember the growth and experiences they have include adjusting to their new routines. Just remember to keep the lines of communication open with both your child and their teachers. Have a great start CMEC!
