 What is Montessori?

The Montessori philosophy of education was developed by Maria Montessori, one of the first women physicians in Italy. Her research and discoveries lead to a profound understanding of how young children develop and learn. Dr. Montessori discovered that children’s learning is not linear, rather there are years of growth and development when sensitive periods for learning occur.

The classrooms in all Montessori environments are child-centered. The principles of Montessori education are based on the understanding that:

  • Children are intrinsically motivated
  • Appreciation of the development of concentration
  • Work at self-directed pace
  • Optimally prepared teachers who act as guides and observers
  • Multi-generational age span in each classroom
  • Freedom within structure
  • Respect in all aspects of the classroom

Please see our Montessori philosophy section for more detailed information.

Is Columbus Montessori affiliated with other Montessori schools in the area?
